Committed to Excellence in the German Tradition

Home vom Jägerherzen

What started as a hobby quickly grew into a passion and began my journey towards a commitment to the performance based German testing (JGHV) standard for breed certification of the Deutsch Langhaar. The basis of the German testing system is about preserving instincts. In order to be successful, a DL has to be versatile and meet all the requirements of JGHV testing. The focus is on keeping instincts intact through comprehensive testing, and not specifically on which ones are used and with what frequency. For example, the fact that German born and bred dogs still point very well despite the vastly different hunting conditions between Europe and North America is a testament to the strength of the JGHV testing system. The breed standard established by the DLV for the Deutsch Langhaar are in flux with individual breeding goals and preferences, which can result in an emergence of type, yet still remain true to the standard.

In accordance with the breed certification criteria of the DLV (Deutsch Langhaar Verband, parent breed club) selection of breeding stock uniquely emphasizes tracking proficiency of wild game, measured by JGHV testing before the age of 18 months.

Excellent conformation standards require that the front and rear of the dog are in balance. Most importantly, balance allows a dog to settle into a sustainable rhythm and speed. Angulation is important for proper movement. While perfect angles allow for maximum reach and therefore speed, balance is dictated by much more than angles.

Certified DLs have met high minimum standards which have been in place for over 125 years. Only offspring from proven performance hunting DLs are eligible for registration. An individual Deutsch Langhaar breeder with integrity and committed to a high standard of excellence is already breeding to or above the minimum standards set by the Deutsch Langhaar Verband. In essence, the Deutsch Langhaar Breeding Regulations do not stifle individual breeding program goals, but rather collectively draws together those that share simliar ideals in the pursuit of excellence. Belonging to the DL-GNA and JGHV provides and additional network of support and information among the membership.

Requirements for Breed Certification
The breeding of the Deutsch Langhaar is inseparably connected to performance. Special emphasis is placed on the dogs' work after the shot, and their calm, mentally sound disposition. Only those DLs that are healthy, display endurance and resilience when they are hunted hard, display no breeding eliminating defects, and meet at least the following requirements are breed certified:

  • Pass a VJP puppy test (or equivalent JGHV performance test)
  • Pass a HZP advanced puppy test (or equivalent JGHV performance test)
  • Rate at least a G (good) in all 3 categories of type, conformation, and coat
  • Hip x-ray rating of A, B, or C
  • Issued a Hartenachweis “hardness” test Certificate according to JGHV regulations
  • Marked loud according to JGHV rules and regulations / Issued a Loud Certificate.

Deutsch Langhaar vom Jägerherzen aims to increase the heritability of positive versatile hunting dog traits through consistent performance testing. In addition to the above criteria for breed certification, vom Jägerherzen uniquely emphasizes the following criteria in the commitment to excellence:

  • All prospective additions to the vom Jägerherzen family are raised to be hunting companions first and foremost.
  • All test results associated with vom Jägerherzen Kennel are reported with complete disclosure and full and accurate detail regardless of the outcome. Results from ALL tests are documented, including multiple test attempts.
  • The integrity of all vom Jägerherzen breeding is documented by genetic profiling.
